Penn National Insurance expands commercial product offerings
New Cyber Security Insurance offers comprehensive claims expense coverage and response services
Nov. 2, 2015—Penn National Insurance announced that the company will begin offering Cyber Security Insurance Coverage as part of its commercial lines product offerings. Cyber Security Insurance provides coverage for expenses and exposures associated with a data breach, such as notification of a breach and remediation services for impacted individuals. The product includes coverages for first-party privacy breach expense, regulatory proceeding claim expenses and third-party cyber liability, along with optional business interruption coverage.
“All businesses are at risk for a data breach, and small to mid-size businesses are the most vulnerable. Businesses that do not have cyber liability insurance will pay three times more for remediation and response services,” according to Randal Mancini, vice president of commercial lines. “What’s unique about our coverage is we have partnered with IDT911, a leading data risk management service provider, to provide comprehensive incident analysis, response and remediation services.”
In addition, commercial policyholders have assistance to proactive privacy breach services and tools, including educational materials and training modules. If a breach occurs, IDT911 experts will help commercial policyholders swiftly and effectively respond. The company will assess breach severity, provide advice on notification and regulatory requirements, and assist with media relations and necessary steps to safeguard sensitive information. Every step of the way, commercial policyholders have a partner to help prevent regulatory sanctions or fines, avoid civil litigation and preserve policyholders’ reputations.
“Offering cyber security breach expense coverage and response services assures our agents and policyholders that they will have the coverage they need, and the experts available to offer guidance, should a breach occur,” Mancini said.

Penn National Insurance names executive VP & COO; announces leadership appointments and organizational chart revisions
Sept. 26, 2014—Penn National Insurance announced that Robert Brandon has been named executive vice president and chief operating officer, responsible for the insurance operations of the company. Brandon's promotion becomes effective Dec. 31, when Christine Sears, executive vice president and COO, who was named president and CEO-elect earlier this year, will succeed Kenneth Shutts as president & CEO, upon his retirement.
Concurrent with Brandon's naming as executive VP and COO, John Foster has been appointed vice president – Underwriting Operations, and John Buchenauer, III, has been appointed vice president – Personal Lines. Both appointments are effective Dec. 31.

August 29, 2014—Penn National Insurance reported today that CEO Kenneth R. Shutts has announced his planned retirement date of Dec. 31, 2014, capping a career spanning 35 years with Penn National Insurance, and that Christine Sears has been elected president & CEO-elect by the company's board of directors.
Penn National Insurance announces management changes
July 31, 2014—Penn National Insurance recently announced three management changes, which build upon the company’s tradition of management acumen and agency focus. Andrew Potalivo was promoted to vice president, Marketing, Sales and Business Development; Don McAuliffe was promoted regional vice president of the Central Atlantic Office; and Linda Pihonsky was named regional vice president of the Pittsburgh Office.
Potalivo joined Penn National Insurance in 2002 as a commercial lines territory manager in the Pittsburgh Office. He also worked in the marketing department as business development manager. Most recently, Potalivo has been working in our Central Atlantic Office, first as commercial underwriting manager, and since 2012 as regional vice president, serving agents in New Jersey, Maryland and Delaware.
Potalivo graduated from Gannon University, Erie, Pa., with a bachelor’s degree in finance. He holds a master’s degree in insurance and management from Boston University. He is a member of the Society of Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters (CPCU), and holds the CPCU and Associate in Risk Management designation. He has served as a class leader for Insurance Institute of America courses.
McAuliffe joined Penn National Insurance in 1986, and he gained broad experience through a variety of field and Home Office positions in personal lines. He has also worked in the Harrisburg Office as a commercial lines territory manager. Most recently, McAuliffe worked in our Marketing, Sales and Business Development Department as business development manager. In this position, McAuliffe oversaw the successful growth of group program business, and he worked to assist high-performing agencies hire new producers.
McAuliffe graduated from the University of Scranton, Scranton, Pa., with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. He is a member of the Society of CPCU and holds the Certified Insurance Counselor designation.
Since joining Penn National Insurance in 2006, Pihonsky has been in the role of Commercial Lines territory manager. Her 28-year career in property/casualty insurance has included experience in claims, underwriting, marketing and producer development.
Linda is a graduate of Allegheny College, Meadville, Pa., with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics. Pihonsky is a member of the Society of CPCU and is a past president of the Allegheny CPCU Society Chapter.
Maffuccio elected president and CEO of Partners Mutual Insurance
June 20, 2014—Richard Maffuccio has been elected president and CEO of Partners Mutual Insurance, an affiliate company of Penn National Insurance, operating in Wisconsin and Iowa. Since February, Maffuccio has been overseeing the day-to-day operations of the company. With this election, Dick moves to full-time, permanent leadership at Partners.
Maffuccio joined Penn National Insurance in 2006, as regional vice president of the Pittsburgh Office. He has gained deep and diverse experience during his career in the property-casualty insurance industry. In addition to his experience with Penn National Insurance, Maffuccio worked for Aetna, Travelers and Crum & Forster. He also worked for 11 years as an independent agent, an experience that will influence his leadership at Partners Mutual Insurance.
Maffuccio graduated from University of Bridgeport, and he earned an MBA from the University of Connecticut. He is an active member of the Society of Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters, and is a past president of the Allegheny Chapter. He has taught risk management, as an adjunct, for Robert Morris University and LaRoche College.

No Vulnerability to OpenSSL Heartbleed Bug

Our Information Technology Security staff members have checked our systems and found that none of our corporate websites use OpenSSL, and they are therefore safe and unaffected by the OpenSSL Heartbleed bug, which has been getting so much media attention lately. We have checked links to related vendor websites and third-party software/appliance providers, and confirmed that those also pose no threat to us.
