Personal protective equipment (PPE) may be necessary to protect workers from
exposure to hazards. PPE includes all accessories designed to create a barrier
between the worker and workplace hazards. A hazard assessment should be
conducted of the workplace to determine if conditions are present that would
require the use of PPE. The equipment chosen should always match the exposure
and should be used by the worker to whom it was issued. Here are areas of
concern in assessing a PPE program for workers.
PPE policy, education and training
-
Is there a written PPE program?
-
Is there a written respirator program?
-
Has training been provided to each worker required to wear PPE?
-
Have trained workers demonstrated an understanding of, and the ability to
properly use, PPE?
-
Is there written certification for each worker who has received PPE training?
-
Do you conduct regularly scheduled PPE training sessions?
-
Is documentation on the PPE program training maintained?
PPE use
-
Do workers use the PPE required by the hazard assessment?
-
Are workers involved in PPE selection?
-
Are protective helmets provided and worn on the jobsite?
-
Are protective helmets inspected periodically for wear or damage?
-
Are protective footwear and gloves used where there is danger of foot or hand
injuries?
-
Are approved respirators provided as needed?
-
Are respirators inspected before and after each use?
-
Has the required PPE been selected to ensure that it properly fits every
worker?
-
Is PPE maintained in a sanitary and reliable condition?
-
Are workers issued, and required to wear, hearing, eye and face protection
devices when necessary?
-
Is a program in place to regularly inspect and service hearing, eye and face
protection devices?
-
Are full-body harnesses used, when necessary, and regularly inspected for
damage or wear?
-
Do workers wear reflective clothing when working at night?
-
Is defective PPE removed from service immediately?
