Worker Safety at Beauty Salons
An operator of a beauty salon should regularly inspect the salon for hazardous conditions that may affect worker safety. Here are conditions that a salon operator should evaluate when making an inspection of their premises.
Environment
- Are salon floors clean and dry?
- Are work areas well-lit?
- Are workstations designed to minimize reaching and bending?
- Are ground-fault circuit interrupters provided in wet areas?
Chemical Safety
- Are labels and material safety data sheets available for all products used in the salon?
- Are bottles and containers properly labeled and tightly closed?
- Are chemicals stored according to the manufacturer’s requirements?
- Is ventilation adequate to remove chemical smells?
- Are chemical-resistant gloves, aprons and other required personal protective equipment available for salon workers to use?
- Are waste materials disposed of properly?
Infection Control
- Are handwashing facilities well stocked with soap and clean towels?
- Are sharp instruments handled carefully?
- Are all reusable tools and instruments disinfected properly?
- Are single-use items discarded immediately after use?
Other Concerns
- Are cords and plugs on electrical equipment in good repair?
- Are hot objects (e.g., curling irons) used away from flammable and combustible materials?
- Are inspection tags on fire extinguishers current?
- Is a first aid kit available?
