Safety Checklist for Retail Bakery Owners Back
Bakery owners have a responsibility to create a safe work environment, provide safety training for workers, and reinforce safe behavior by their workers. Workers have a responsibility to follow established procedures and work in a safe manner. These questions are designed to help owners analyze workers’ actions, prevent injuries and illnesses, and minimize losses. The focus should be on promoting safe acts and correcting unsafe behavior and conditions.

Do you …

  • Provide safety training for all new workers and refresher safety training annually?
  • Provide ground fault protection for electric outlets at sinks and around wet work areas?
  • Ensure all work areas are well-ventilated and properly illuminated?
  • Provide bake racks with handles for ease of movement?
  • Ensure that hazardous chemicals are stored in proper containers and not in food containers?
  • Provide first aid kits and train all workers on what to do during an emergency?
  • Ensure that mixers with external power have all belts, chains, gears, pulleys, sprockets and other moving parts completely enclosed?
  • Provide lifting devices to move bowls weighing more than 50 pounds, including contents, into and out of the mixing position?
  • Routinely check all electrical equipment to make sure cords are free of nicks, cuts or exposed wires?
  • Remind workers to be vigilant for potential safety problems and to be prepared to assist other workers to correct unsafe procedures?
  • Require the use of personal protective equipment when handling hot items or cleaning chemicals?
  • Require that workers use special safety knives,rather than ordinary cutting knives, to open cartons?
  • Require workers to handle knives safely by cutting away from the body, and, when chopping food, keeping the point of the chopping knife on the block and bending the fingers under while holding the food with the other hand?
  • Require workers to immediately clean up any food spills, grease or other material that may cause a slippery floor?
  • Require workers to practice safe lifting techniques and to request help with any packages or items exceeding 50 lbs.(22.7 Kgs)?
  • Require workers to use lockout/tagout procedures to neutralize energy hazards when performing maintenance, repair or cleaning equipment?
  • Require workers to review the material safety data sheets before using new cleaning chemicals?
